Tianjin Eye Institute (TEI) was established in 1996.

In 2008, TEI was approved as Tianjin Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology and Visual Science by Tianjin Science and Technology Committee. Currently, TEI consists of several functional units including Molecular Genetics Center, Cellular Electrophysiological Laboratory, Immunology Research Center, Ophthalmic Pathology Laboratory, tissue culture room and animal facility. TEI has provided good platform for high-level scientific research and the training of next generation of ophthalmologists and eye researchers. UP to date, TEI has obtained numerous grant support from National Natural Science Foundation, Ministry of Health Research Program, Tianjin Natural Science Foundation and Tianjin Health Bureau Science Program. The research findings were published in a great variety of journals including those with high impact factors such as The American Journal of human Genetics, Human Genetics, IOVS, Ophthalmic Genetics and so on. The current research interests in TEI focus on the molecular, genetic and physiological studies on the mechanisms for a wide range of eye diseases, e.g. retinitis pigmentosa, congenital fibrosis of extraocular muscles, congenital nystagmus, age-related macular degeneration, congenital cataract and other eye diseases; immunological eye diseases; corneal and ocular surface disease; visual development related eye diseases (amblyopia) and eye movement related diseases.(2016.7)
